Emerald and Gold, Honey and Stone

Emerald green canopy shot full of holes
Gaps filled in with shining, glittering gold liquid,
Treasure from the skies even as the glow continues to fade.
Fairytale castles nestled in the trees,
Soon to be enveloped by the inevitable darkness,
Casting their own light from within,
A warm, honeyed glow beating back the night.
Yellow, always yellow, light,
The white is too harsh and bright.
The white light is cold and sterile,
Offers no illusions of the fantastical.
This place is not a place for harsh reality,
The world is filled with far too much of that.
This is a place where golden glow is meant to be,
Painted in such a way to give the impression of life.
These are the hosts of old dreams too stubborn to die,
Birthed by the innocent worldview of a child,
And pure, untainted hope poured into the heart,
Perhaps in an overzealous amount,
The way a child baking cookies adds too much sugar.
It is far crueler to live in the darkness,
Yet the cruelty is the oft chosen path,
Neglecting to indulge our basest desire
Of dreaming of everything all right.
Old dreams taunt me on this journey,
Making promises of holding court in one of these castles,
Raising heirs to our modest kingdoms,
Offering to create the slightest bit of magic in a world devoid.
But my name was never fated to be on the deed,
This neighborhood was never meant to be mine.
A hundred reminders of promises unfulfilled,
Places once dreamed of hosting a life that will never be mine.
I am resigned to remember fondly,
The dreams of once upon a long time ago.
Amidst the emerald and gold, the honey and stone.
