Late night chitchat on a rooftop
Too far from the world for it to touch you,
But close enough to watch the watercolor neon beauty.
Close enough to catch a glimpse of other lives.
Staying up late on a hotel bed,
Cross legged in low light together,
Unraveling the secrets of the universe,
Swapping dreams and secrets and childhood photos.
You deserved to be kissed with hunger,
By someone who makes you feel desired,
With lips that declare that you are fully theirs
Without a word ever escaping.
Hands held as the world spins around you,
Anchoring each other and staring at stars,
Trillions of stars in all their splendor,
And they are still pale in comparison to your smile.
Contemplating reality and wishes for the future,
What ifs involving sitting at European cafes
Or watching fireworks at landmarks,
Figuring out where you want to photograph each other.
How well do you sleep knowing you’re together,
Even when separated by distance and time?
Is this the person you want to call when you can’t sleep
Because their breathing on the phone quiets your frayed mind?
Our souls are so infinitely complex
That there is no universal litmus test for love.
Yet there are still so many signs that tell you
When you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
