Inspired by “Inshallah” by Sting.
Peace is a lie.
There are only wars we see,
And ones we do not.
The world is held hostage by tyrants
Seeking to exhume long-buried empires
In fruitless hopes they will stand again.
Men speak for gods who preach peace,
To justify death and destruction.
False prophets claim the will of their divines
Aligns with their own earthly ambitions.
The arrogant and amoral will take what isn’t theirs
With rusted rifles, poison gas, and hatred.
The fire will consume everything without and within,
Leaving only ashes and charred remains
Of children who deserved sunshine and joy,
Of people who deserved love and hope.
Annihilation is nobody’s birthright.
A “moral stand” means nothing if it only helps your enemy.
Cowards unwilling to pick up swords while the wolves circle,
Knowing they will never be the first ones consumed,
Call attention to causes they can use as cudgels.
They are content use others’ suffering
To validate their own positions.
Who will speak for the unsung tragedies
Divorced from a simple narrative?
The world’s fickle, callous mechanics are a gradient of gray.
Everyone sitting at the chessboard has their own designs.
Leaders must perform cruel calculations with blood on their hands
so that we can continue to believe that ours stay clean.
It isn’t fair. It isn’t right. It isn’t moral.
It gives no peace to children sleeping starving under burning stars.
This is an imperfect world,
And we must accept that it shall remain so.
We must still value truth and integrity,
Act with honor and dignity.
Though not every battle is a fight we’ll win,
We owe it to the children to try.
