Inspired by Joe Jackson’s song “Fool.”
Beware ye bastards who seek the wrath of the playwrights.
The pen is mightier than the sword,
Mightier so when it inspires a thousand more swords.
And all the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Wouldn’t dare cross the wordsmiths again.
Beware the bards who bend the masses to their tunes,
Who inspire frenzy and ecstasy in equal measures.
Only lunatics dare besmirch the good nature,
Of those who shall craft songs disparaging your every move,
Which will live for generations in homes and taverns across the land.
Beware the painters who shall record your every sin,
Ensuring the world sees the depths of your treachery.
Every brushstroke, another condemnation.
Every line, another nail in your coffin.
The way they create the world is the way others remember it.
Beware the oft-derided jesters,
Targeted by mercurial kings with abuse outstripping reason.
A joker’s laugh oft masks sinister intent,
Since nobody predicts well when the fool will snap,
And your legacy shall live as an immortal punchline.
Those who cultivate the scorn and derision of the writers and artists
Soon find their animus repaid tenfold.
Only so long will enmity be tolerated
By those who seek only to make the world more beautiful.
